Common Lash Extension Myths Busted Part 1

Writer: Kayla SpagnoloKayla Spagnolo

  1. "I can’t get my lashes wet."

This one’s an oldie but goodie- I still get clients that come in and tell me their previous lash tech told them either to wait 24/48hours, or not to get them wet at all. This couldn’t be further from the truth, in fact it’s basically the opposite. Moisture actually seals the bond! (*It is extremely important to wash your lashes daily)

  2. "I can’t use oil-based products."

Oil-based products are completely safe to continue to use with lash extensions. When placed properly, lash extensions will only come out with the natural lash (when it's naturally falling out), or when removed with a professional remover. (If you've ever tried to remove your lashes at home, you'll know that nothing in your medicine cabinet or kitchen will remove those lashes!)

  3. "I have to go in every 2 weeks for fills."

The life cycle for any one natural eye lash is, on average, 8 weeks. When placed properly and flesh with the skin of the lid, the lash should be able to last until it naturally falls out. (The reason they don't look as full for the entire 8 weeks is because each natural lash is in a different stage of hair growth)

  4. "My lashes are going through a seasonal shed."

There have been no studies to prove this theory that our lashes shed due to the seasons changing. While there are some instances that the lashes may shed in bulk (for example stress or certain medications or medical treatments), it is very rare and not because of the seasons changing.

  5. "I can’t get lashes because I’m allergic."

There is a very simple protocol to follow in order to continue getting lash extensions, even if you've developed contact dermatitis. It's a very easy fix, but you do need to visit a doctor with the symptoms (swollen, itchy eyes) in order to obtain a prescription for a topical steroid. You will then use this cream the day before your fills as well as immediately after. (Over the years, I have had clients develop contact dermatitis and EVERY SINGLE one of them who followed these simple steps were able to continue to get lash extensions with mild to no symptoms!)

Having 9 years of experience with lash extensions, and continuing my education on a regular basis, I can proudly stand by these facts. They are not what your average lash artist may tell you, but I am not your average lash artist!
